A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
